In the spring of 1979, the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier, which was preparing for nine months of deployment, was given an extra task. The flight regiment of a ship that still belonged to the Atlantic fleet at the time was involved in the filming of the film, which was then released to cinemas under the title Final Countdown. Most of the recordings were made aboard the Nimitz, and a smaller number were made at land bases in Norfolk and Key West. The final scene of the film was filmed in the home port of Nimitz in Norfolk, and some F-14, A-6 and SH-3 helicopters were installed at Key West Naval Air Base (NAS Key West) at the time of filming ...
